Supervision
Jay is a board-approved supervisor and can provide clinical supervision for provisional psychologists and psychologists seeking clinical endorsement. Jay can also provide general supervision to provisional, registered, and clinical psychologists.
Jay can provide clinical supervision and guidance in multiple modalities of psychotherapy including:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
- Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
- Schema Therapy
- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
- Internal Family Systems (IFS)
He can also assist in incorporating ideas and techniques from multiple modalities seamlessly into your practice. He has numerous useful books and resources that can be loaned out to further assist with your understanding.
Jay has a wealth of knowledge and resources when it comes to diagnostic assessments and psychometrics which he is always willing to share. He can assist with providing practical advice around planning a difficult assessment including which measures to use, what to look out for in your clinical observations of a client and interpreting confusing testing results.
Jay works predominantly with adults with very complex presentations including:
- complex PTSD
- dissociative identity disorder (DID) and polyfragmented DID
- severe personality disorders that are often unresponsive to mainline treatments
- suicidality
- neurodivergence – including ADHD, ASD, and sensory processing difficulties
- complex comorbidity – clients with multiple diagnoses that interact and exacerbate one another
Jay understands the emotional toll that these presentations can have and can provide some calm, centered, and objective advice from an outside perspective. He can assist in exploring relational difficulties with clients, transference/countertransference issues, ethical dilemmas, or just provide debriefing around a difficult case. He also particularly enjoys sharing joy when something works out well, or when some hard work with a client pays off. Jay provides supervision in an open, non-judgmental, safe, and empowering manner. He does not seek to take over the case or provide unsolicited advice. He treats supervision as a collaborative effort to improve the therapeutic relationship and outcome for the client, and boost the confidence and resilience of the therapist.
If you have a particular case that you find overwhelming, are feeling stuck and confused by a case, or having some relational difficulties with a client (or colleague) Jay can help you to plan your way forward. He can also provide group supervision if this format is preferrable. Jay can provide supervision in-person at his Valentine practice or via Telehealth.
